Hughes Art Conservation and Collections Care is an independently owned small business based in New York City and the Hudson Valley specializing in the conservation, restoration, and documentation of works of art. The studio specializes in three-dimensional sculptures and variable media installations and provides art conservation services for a broad range of materials to institutions, corporations, private collectors, and galleries.

Our mission is to provide quality, discreet, and comprehensive services to all forms of sculpture, design, and multimedia installations. We endeavor to approach artworks individually and with consideration for all stakeholders involved with their care. Our work adheres to the American Institute for Conservation (AIC) Code of Ethics and is affiliated with international professional organizations including AIC, ICOM-CC, and IIC.

Biography

James received his MA in art history and an advanced certificate in art conservation from the Institute of Fine Arts Conservation Center at New York University, the oldest training program of its type in the country. He has worked at a range of private practices and institutions, such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum,  Cooper-Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, The Brooklyn Museum, The American Museum of Natural History, and The National September 11 Memorial & Museum. In addition to modern art conservation, James has studied industrial design in Milan and has worked as an archaeological field conservator on site at Selinunte Archaeological Park in Sicily, Italy.
